Gadhimai festival is a month-long Hindu festival that is held once every five years at the Gadhimai temple of Bariyarpur, in Bara District, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the capital Kathmandu in southern Nepal. The event involves the world’s largest sacrifice of animals (approx. 500,000) – including water buffaloes, pigs, goats, chicken and pigeons – with the goal of pleasing Gadhimai, the goddess of power.
More than 20,000 buffaloes were sacrificed on the first day. It is estimated that 500,000 animals were killed during the Gadhimai festival of 2009. The ritual killings were performed by more than 200 men in a concrete slaughterhouse near the temple.
The next ritual will take place this year on Nov 2014.
Please SHARE and SIGN this petition and join me and many other people around the world in the fight to save the poor animals that are to be sacrificed in this year’s ritual. Join us in asking the Nepalese authorities to ban the Gadhimai ritual and stop the cruel and barbaric sacrifice of so many innocent animals.
